As Biden is sworn in, Washington DC shields itself from threats of violent protest

FBI fears an internal attack during the inauguration and investigates the troops who will be in Washington DC, according to a report.

A defense source told the AP agency that U.S. authorities fear there may be some attack planned from within and executed by the troops involved in maintaining security during the inauguration of Joe Biden on Wednesday.

The consequence: the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating each of the 25,000 military personnel who are in Washington DC. The concerns arise from reports since the assault on the Capitol on January 6, about possible riots in the legislative buildings, which has led state authorities to guard the surroundings.

Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy told the agency on Sunday that they are aware of the threats and that he has asked the commanders to be vigilant in order to take action in case of any eventuality. However, he said that – despite this AP report – they have no indication of threats to the interior and that the investigations have not yielded any clues that something is being planned.

“We are continually looking at everything, taking second and third looks at each of the personnel assigned to this operation,” McCarthy said in an interview with the agency. He explained that the military is being trained to detect threats, if any.

The FBI’s review would involve, AP explains, the agency running the names of all participants through a database and watch lists to determine if any would attract attention.
