The theft of some 600 meters of fiber optic cable in Catalonia caused in the early hours of this Monday the interruption in high-speed rail transport (AVE) on the Madrid-Barcelona line for more than 5 hours, local media reported.
The vandalism act generated a cut in communications, signaling, and other security systems of the section between L’Arboç (Tarragona) and Figueres-Vilafant (Girona), affecting more than 7,000 passengers due to delays and cancellations in 22 trains.
Operations were restored around noon, although the delays in services lasted several more hours. Subsequently, the Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalan Autonomous Police) managed to capture the alleged perpetrator, a 19-year-old boy, in the municipality of Santa Oliva (Tarragona), and recovered part of the stolen material.
