Germany: more border controls for virus variants

Germany will extend its strict border controls with the Czech Republic and the Austrian province of Tyrol until March 3.

Germany will extend its strict border controls with the Czech Republic and the Austrian province of Tyrol until March 3.

The controls began on February 14 in an attempt to reduce the spread of more contagious variants of the coronavirus detected in those areas. Germany limits entry to its own citizens and residents, as well as truck drivers, health care workers and others, including those crossing to work in systemically relevant sectors. All of them will have to show a negative diagnostic test for the virus.

German border police have prevented the passage of thousands of people since the start of the controls.

The restrictions were initially to last for 10 days, but the Interior Ministry told the dpa news agency on Tuesday that they will be extended.

Germany rejected criticism from the European Commission in the wake of the measures. Its European Affairs Minister Michael Roth on Tuesday rejected the idea that the country was not respecting EU laws and said its actions were in line with Schengen, the treaty that regulates the free movement of people across Europe.
