    Berlin suspends AstraZeneca vaccinations again

The German state of Berlin has again suspended use of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine in people under 60 years of age due to reports of blood clots.

The decision was made as a precaution before a meeting of representatives from Germany’s 16 states after the country’s medical regulator announced 31 cases of rare blood clots in people who had received the vaccine shortly before, Berlin’s top health official, Dilek Kalayci, said. Nine of the people died.

All but two of the patients were women between the ages of 20 and 63, according to the Paul Ehrlich Institute, the German medical regulator.

Reports of an unusual form of blood clot in the head, known as cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, prompted several countries this month to temporarily halt use of AstraZeneca’s drug.

Following a review by medical experts, the European Medicines Agency concluded that the benefits of the vaccine outweighed the risks, although it recommended that warnings about possible unusual adverse effects be given to patients and physicians.

Many EU countries have subsequently resumed use of the vaccine.

Two state hospitals in Berlin had announced earlier on Tuesday that they had stopped administering AstraZeneca’s coronavirus vaccine to female employees under the age of 55. The directors of five university hospitals in western Germany called for a temporary halt to the use of the vaccine in all young women because of the risk of thrombosis.

Some 2.7 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine have been administered in Germany so far.
