Target will hire 100,000 employees this season

The Target department store chain announced this Thursday, September 22, that will hire 100,000 workers in order to face the season. This is usually characterized by an increase in the demand for products due to the Halloween celebrations as well as the December holidays.

The company said in a statement that the new employees will be hired after existing Target workers establish their holiday shifts. Starting wages range from $15 to $24 per hour.

Target’s announcement comes on the heels of one issued by supermarket chain Walmart, which recently offered 40,000 jobs for the holiday season. The number of job offers of the company in the season is much lower than that offered last year, with around 110,000 vacancies.

Unlike Walmart, Target hired an approximate number of workers compared to the previous yearwhere it employed 130,000 people on a temporary basis.

Target also announced that will kick off its Target Sale Day promotions starting October 6, earlier than in previous years. Shoppers will also be able to take advantage of Target’s price match program from early October through December 24.

The current strategy arises as a result of the excess inventory that the company has recorded in recent months. In its most recent earnings report, Target reported a nearly 90% drop in quarterly profit.as it cut prices to attract more buyers.

Given the promotions that some stores like Target offer, the forecasts for this year’s sales are modest and some projections point to a growth of 15 to 3% from 2021, removing the effect of inflation.

Hiring staff is a factor that has an impact on the economy. While some companies are on temporary contracts, others like Bed Bath & Beyond have closed dozens of stores and laid off a considerable part of their staff.
