Faced with slow growth, Google wants to “minimize distractions” for its employees

The American giant has expressed “real concerns” about the group’s productivity. He says he does not want to lay off to date, but wishes to slow down the pace of hiring during 2022.

Google wants to boost the productivity of its employees. That’s according to a meeting between CEO Sundar Pichai and employees, held on Wednesday, July 27, CNBC reports.

“It is clear that we are facing a difficult macroeconomic environment, with more uncertainties to come,” justified the boss of Google.

“There are real concerns that our productivity as a whole is not what it should be for the number of employees we have,” as the group employs more than 170,000 people.

Sundar Pichai therefore asked employees to help “create a culture that is more mission-focused, product-focused and customer-focused. We should think about how we can minimize distractions and really raise the bar of excellence in products and productivity.”

    Slow down hiring

This meeting follows the publication of its quarterly results last week, which attest to slow growth. Net profit at Alphabet, Google’s parent company, fell 13% year on year to $16 billion in the latest quarter.

The group says it does not want to lay off to date. He had however announced in mid-July a slowdown in hiring during 2022, reported the wall street journal.

“To move forward, we need to be more entrepreneurial, work with greater urgency, sharper focus and more aggressiveness than we have shown on better days,” he said. writes Sundar Pichai in an email sent on July 12 to employees, referring to the context of uncertain growth.
