    Title defense trounces competition

    The Betking Ethiopia Premier League EPL 2022–23 season comes to a thrilling conclusion today at Adama Science and Technology University Stadium as St. George cement their status as champions for a record 16th time – and second year in a row! It was a crowning achievement for head coach Zerihun Shengeta and his video assistant, who helped transform training practices that paid off big time on the pitch.

    The Horsemen galloped to victory by winning 18 of their 29 matches, drawing nine, and losing just twice, for an impressive 63 points. Their dominance throughout the season has earned three of their player’s nominations for Star Player awards, including top scorer Ismael Oro Agoro and midfield maestros Biniyam Belay and Amanuel Tirfu. Meanwhile, deserving coach Zerihun has been nominated for Coach of the Year.

    St. George has long been known for hiring foreign coaches but locals are now getting their chance to shine. Zerihun, in his second triumphant year, has proven to be the right horseman for the job.

    As champions, St. George will represent Ethiopia in next year’s CAF Champions League while runners-up Bahir Dar City compete in the Confederation Cup. But the quest for individual glory continues with nominees for Young Player of the Year, Player of the Year and Golden Glove gong.

    In the best goalkeeper category, Pep Saido (from Hadia Hossaina), Abubakar Nura (Insurance), and Binyam Gentu (Wolaita Dacha) have been nominated.

    The young player of the year category sees Fikru Alemayheu (Legetafo Le Gedadi), Yosef Tarekun (Adama City), Emmanuel Terfu (St. George), Zelema Abate (Wolaita Dicha), and Abebaye Hajiso (Wolaita Dicha) nominated.

    Basiru Umar (Insurance), Alelegn Azane (Bahir Dar City), Ismail Oro Agoro (St. George), Binyam Belay (St. George), Fuad Fareja (Bahir Dar City), Yared Baye (Bahir Dar City), and Getaneh Kebede (Wolkite City) have all been nominated for the player of the year category.

    It’s glory road again for the magnificent Horsemen – thanks to thorough training, teamwork and tenacious talent that has once more carried them to the summit of Ethiopian football!

    St. George will receive the trophy in their last match against Dire Dawa on Saturday.
