Spain celebrates its fourth gold in front of 13,000 people: "This is much better than a movie"

From 18:30 the doors of the Wizink Center, in Madrid, were open this Monday. A slow but constant trickle of people began to fill the pavilion: 13,000 have been the tickets that the Spanish Basketball Federation has given away to the fans. On stage, an entertainer entertains the audience while training them for what is to come: the team that has just been crowned European champion.

Thousands of people jump in the Wizink Center with the music at full volume. The motivational video with the best moments of the national team in the Eurobasket, accompanied by the song Harder than you think of Public Enemy, announces the arrival of the players. With Lorenzo Brown the public goes crazy and the Wizink Center resounds to the cry of “Lorenzo, Lorenzo”. The same thing happens with Juancho Hernangomez, MVP of the final, with Willy Hernangomez, MVP of the championship and Rudy Fernandez, captain of the national team. When everyone is here, it sounds We are the championsfrom Queen.

Scariolo is the first to speak and between thanks, he takes the opportunity to remember the dialogue of the film Looking for happiness: “Never let anyone tell you that you can’t do something.” One by one, the national team players pass the microphone. The thanks to the coaching staff and teammates are repeated. It is Willy Hernangomez’s turn who introduces Lorenzo Brown and announces that his partner will say a few words in Spanish. The point guard limits himself to pronouncing a “hello”, followed by a “long live Spain”, to end with a quick thank you in English.

Juancho is next. The public chants his name. When he picks up the microphone he thanks the fans in a hoarse voice, he left it for them in the final on Sunday. The public yells in unison about MVP and Willy ends with a clear message: “sometimes life is like a movie, but this is much better”. Garuba’s turn comes, and the words hardly come out. For him it is a pride to represent Spain. It seems that he does not believe it and resumes the general chant: “Champions of Europe”. And he hesitates to Brown: “Lorenzo de Albacete.”

When everyone is done talking, the lights come on, but the audience doesn’t want to leave. It starts ringing Sweet Caroline, by Neil Diamond and the players wave from the stage. It is the security of the pavilion that has to end the celebration and send the public home.
