This was confirmed by the organizers of the Formula Regional European Championship (FRECA) and van’t Hoff’s Team MP Motorsport.
“We are devastated by the loss of one of our greatest Dutch talents who has brought so much energy to our team over the years he has been racing with us,” tweeted van’t Hoff’s team MP Motorsport.
The talent has been part of the racing team since his debut in 2021. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to Dilano’s family and loved ones. We stand by them and our team members who have lost not only a rider but a friend.”
The youth event was part of the supporting program of the 24-hour race in Spa. The exact circumstances of van’t Hoff’s accident remained unclear for the time being. Live images showed that the accident occurred on a wet track and poor visibility when a driver lost control of his car. According to the Dutch newspaper “AD”, van’t Hoff spun in his car and was then hit by another car.
Formula 1 reacts in shock
The shocking news also reached Formula 1 on the sidelines of the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg. “We are very saddened by today’s news of the death of Dilano van ‘t Hoff at Spa-Francorchamps,” said Formula 1 Managing Director Stefano Domenicali. “Dilano passed away while pursuing his dream of reaching the top of motorsport. Our thoughts, along with the entire motorsport community, are with his family and loved ones.”
Accident commemorates fatal accident of 2019
In August 2019, a similar accident occurred during a Formula 2 race in Spa, in which Frenchman Anthoine Hubert died. This led to a renewed increase in security measures in Spa.
A minute’s silence was held before the Formula 2 race on Saturday afternoon in Spielberg, where MP Motorsport was also represented with its own team.
