According to information from the “Bild” newspaper and the specialist magazine “Kicker”, Julian Nagelsmann is to become the new national football coach. The German Football Association (DFB) had agreed in principle with the 36-year-old former coach of FC Bayern to work together after the home European Championships in 2024, “Bild” initially reported. Only the final details remain to be clarified. According to “Kicker”, the DFB will confirm the personnel shortly.
When introducing the new DFB sports director, Andreas Rettig, DFB president Bernd Neuendorf blocked questions about the new national coach of the men’s national team. According to Neuendorf, he will not give “any water level reports,” but the decision will be made before the DFB team travels to the USA. This starts on October 9th.
Völler was only on the bench once
The DFB parted ways with national coach Hansi-Flick on September 10th. The DFB team had lost 4-1 against Japan the evening before, their third game in a row. In the 2-1 win against France on September 12th in Dortmund, sports director Rudi Völler temporarily took over as team boss together with Hannes Wolf and former national player Sandro Wagner on the German bench during a short comeback. The 63-year-old had already described this as a “one-off” task before the game.
Nagelsmann is apparently coming to the DFB on a free transfer
Julian Nagelsmann was relieved of his duties in Munich last March during an international break – although FC Bayern still had a chance of winning the championship, winning the DFB Cup and winning the Champions League at that time. The Munich team had signed Thomas Tuchel as their successor.
Nagelsmann’s contract with Bayern, which runs until mid-2026, should be terminated and he will come to the DFB on a free transfer, reports “Bild”. According to the tabloid, the new national coach will receive a monthly salary of 400,000 euros.
