The European Athletics Championships kicked off this Monday at the Munich Olympic Stadium, the scene of the 1972 Games and the European Championships 20 years ago. Now, on the fourth day of competition, the Spanish delegation faces a new opportunity to continue adding metals to an already brilliant medal table: two golds, three silvers and one bronze; only behind the eight medals from Germany and the seven from the United Kingdom. This Thursday, Spain seeks to enlarge its win count:
about the tartan
First thing in the morning, Irene Sanchez-Escribano and Carolina Robles have qualified for the final of the 3,000 obstacles. Blanca Fernandez could not do the same, and was eliminated.
Around 10:30, Adrian Ben and Mariano Garcia have certified the ticket for the final of the 800 meters. After a bad race, Álvaro de Arriba did not have the same luck and was eliminated. In the women’s event, Marina Martinez was left out of the semifinals, where the very young Lucia Pinacchio will be, classified by time.
In the 400 meters hurdles, Jesus David Delgado got into the semifinals with the second best mark of his series (50.61). Shortly before, Sara Gallego had done the same in the women’s event.
In the 200 meters dash, Daniel Rodriguez has entered the semifinals —where Pol Retamal is already waiting— after finishing third in his qualifying series. Lucia Carrillo did not have the same luck, who with a bad start finished her test in an insufficient 23.62 seconds, just two hundredths of the time classification. Paula Sevilla will be the only Spanish representative in this afternoon’s semis.
Already in the finals category, Mario Garcia Romo, Ignacio Fontes and Gonzalo Garcia will search for the metals in one of the great historical tests of Spanish athletics, the 1,500 meters. The same as Carla Gallardo, Marta Garcia and Cristina Ruiz, this time in the 5,000.
jumps and throws
Earlier this Thursday, Arantza Moreno finished eighth in her javelin group with a throw of 56.08 metres. We will have to wait for the second group to see if the Spanish has enough record and qualifies for the final, but it is complicated.
While, Maria Vicente has left three null in the long jump, one of her favorite heptathlon events, where she has been sunk in the classification. The highlight of the day in terms of throwing comes at 8:10 pm with the hammer final, where Javier Cienfuegos from Badajoz will seek the medal.
