The representatives of the Republican Party of Arizona, Andy Biggs and Pat Fallon of Texas on Wednesday presented new articles from impeachment on the House of Representatives against the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkassaying the top Biden administration official has “violated his oath of office, wreaking havoc in this country and must be charged.”
“He should be charged because he is a public official who has lost the public’s trust and is an imminent threat to the United States of America,” Biggs said at a news conference on Capitol Hill.
Biggs, who previously filed articles of impeachment against Mayorkas in 2021 when the House was under Democratic control, said he would file the articles along with other conservative members of the GOP, including Reps. Lauren Boebert, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Bob Good and others.
Biggs and Fallon have the objective of forcing the dismissal of Mayorkas, whom they accuse of abandoning his responsibilities in both immigration and drug trafficking matters.
Their respective resolutions must be validated first by the Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives, under Republican control, and then by the plenary session of this chamber, before reaching the Senate, which has the power to carry out political trials.
Under Mayorkas, Biggs said at a news conference, more than 5 million immigrants have crossed the southern border illegally. “I think everyone clearly understands that we have a crisis,” he said.
“We want to remove him from his position because he is not serving the interests of the United States, but his enemies. For example, the Mexican drug cartels. The situation has gone from crisis to catastrophe and bordering on collapse,” Fallon added.
Mayorkas has been in the crosshairs of the conservatives even before they gained control of the House of Representatives and when they took office last January they have accelerated their efforts to get him to resign.
“He is going to spend so much time testifying in Congress that a parking space should be reserved,” joked the “number two” of the Republicans in the Lower House, Steve Scalise, on Tuesday.
For Republicans, the high numbers of illegal immigration represent an invasion and drug trafficking is also worrisome, especially fentanyl, a powerful synthetic drug of which the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) seized 379 million doses in 2022, “enough to kill all American citizens,” according to that body.
“It is the responsibility of Mayorkas to prevent it from arriving. I will go a step further to say that he ultimately belongs to the president, Joe Biden. We let Mayorkas know that we are going to impeach him, but that he should resign now,” said fellow Conservative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a member of the most radical wing of her party.
