Rep. Adam Kinzinger gave his House valedictory speech warning that the GOP “has embraced lies and deceit.”as well as warning that corrosive conspiracy theories began during Donald Trump’s tenure, leading to the January 6 attack on the Capitol.
“Our democracy is not working”said Adam Kinzinger, the Republican who will leave Congress this year after representing Illinois’ 16th district since 2011.
“After the tragic Oklahoma City bombing, former President George W. Bush publicly rebutted those who used fear to garner support. In stark contrast, our leaders today belittle, and in some cases justify attacks on the US Capitol as ‘legitimate political speech’‘. The great party of Lincoln, Roosevelt and Reagan has turned its back on the ideals of liberty and self-government. Instead, has embraced lies and deceit“, were the words of Kinzinger.
Kinzinger and Liz Cheney are the only Republicans willing to serve on the committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack and the events that led to the attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election and keep Trump in office.
“The Republican Party used to believe in a big tent that housed the weary masses, poor, huddled, yearning to breathe free. Now we harbor the ignorant, the racists, that only feed the anger and hatred of those who are different from us”, he expressed on the podium.
Rep. Kinzinger was one of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Donald Trump after the January 6 attack, plus his membership on the Investigative Committee, would have made it difficult or impossible for him to win a Republican primary.
Adam Kinzinger also left a message for Democrats: “To my fellow Democrats, you too must bear the burden of our failures. Many of you have asked me, ‘Where are all the good Republicans?’”
“This is no longer the usual policy; this is not a game. Americans deserve a democracy that values truthful leaders and real dialogue between our parties. I think we need to put our differences aside and remember that the nation itself will only survive if people have faith in each other.
