Hundreds of people attended the celebration of the pride month of the president Joe Biden and the first lady Jill Biden at the White House on Saturday.
Emphasizing the Biden Administration’s support for the LGBTQ+ community, the event was aimed at assuring them that they feel welcome in the country, amid concerns about the rise in discriminatory legislation, especially targeting transgender people, which is being passed in several states.
“So today I want to send a message to the entire community, especially transgender children: they are loved. They are heard. They are understood. And they belong,” President Biden said.
Originally planned for Thursday, the event envisioned as the largest Pride celebration in White House history, was rescheduled for Saturday due to compromised air quality caused by hazardous air originating from the Canadian wildfires.
However, the White House on Thursday unveiled a series of new initiatives aimed at safeguarding the rights and well-being of the LGBTQ+ community in the United States.
The new Biden administration initiative is called the “LGBTQI+ Community Safety Partnership” and is a collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Health and Human Services to work with community organizations to provide safety training and resources to better protect and serve the LGBTQI+ community.
In addition to providing resources to “help children thrive in mental health, family affirmation, homelessness, and foster care,” the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights will appoint a new coordinator to counter censorship of books in public libraries that is happening in several states.
