The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, announced Friday afternoon a new payment order to House staff of $212,100 per year. The doctor puts the maximum jump for workers at $38,000 more than what the legislators themselves earned in the Capitol.
“As you know, our hard-working, patriotic congressional staff is an integral part of the running of the House of Representatives: ensure that this institution can effectively carry out our legislative and constituent responsibilitiesPelosi told her colleagues in Congress. “To that end, we must do everything we can to retain and recruit our nation’s best talent, and build a congressional workforce that reflects the communities we are honored to serve.”
The increase in the Spokesperson’s Pay Order is “consistent” with the recent increase in the maximum annual salary rate of the Level II of the Executive Branch and the Superior Executive Branch.
Pelosi also assured that with this new annual salary “you establish for the first time a minimum annual staff salary of $45,000, more fair, competitive that has helped open public service positions to those who may not have been able to pay for it before.”
The Post reported that in 2021, Pelosi raised the maximum salary for House staff to $199,300 although in May the salary cap was raised to $203,700, at which time the speaker also instituted a $45,000 minimum wage for staff. Ranking members of Congress earn $174,000 a year. Members of the congressional leadership earn slightly more, with Pelosi earning $223,500 per year as House speaker.
“This work must continue through the 118th Congress and beyond, as we continue our proper stewardship of this historic institution,” the Speaker of the House of Representatives concluded.
