Raquel Teran is a hardline politician who has countered attacks from the anti-immigrant stances of some Republicans and conservative groups, including having to face questions about her US citizenship.
The Douglas, Arizona native has worked as a political and community organizer, helping to unseat former Republican state legislator Russell Pearce – who designed the so-called “show me your papers” law – as well as collaborating in the defeat of former Maricopa Sheriff Joe Arpaio. , known for its “immigrant hunting” strategy.
In 2018, after being elected as a state legislator, she had to face a complaint that questioned her citizenship, something that a judge dismissed when he found no merit; It was what is called in judicial jargon, a “frivolous lawsuit.”
Teran is now running for Arizona’s Third District for Congress and is endorsed by BOLD PAC, the electoral arm of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC).
“Receiving the endorsement of CHC BOLD PAC is not only a gesture of confidence towards our campaign; “It is a powerful affirmation of the fundamental role that diversity and representation play in our democracy,” Teran celebrated. “This endorsement is not just for me; “It is a milestone for all voices fighting for equity, justice and inclusion in our political system.”
Linda Sanchez, president of the CHC BOLD PAC, highlighted the profile of Teran, the daughter of immigrants, and her work as a community organizer, as well as the actions she undertook as a state legislator.
“Raquel is a constant defender of reproductive rights, public schools and better wages, while she prioritizes the needs of Arizona’s working families,” said Sanchez.
Sanchez recalled Teran’s community work and his fight against extremist actions such as those of Pearce and Arpaio.
“Raquel worked hard to defeat Arizona’s controversial racial profiling law, SB 1070, and then was elected to serve in the state legislature, where she helped protect the state’s minimum wage and paid sick leave for all Arizona workers. ”Sanchez added. “She fights Republican extremism that threatens our democracy and she could make history as the first Latina to represent Arizona in Congress.”
Although born in Arizona, Teran grew up in Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico, on the border with the US, living on the street that divides both countries.
As a community and political organizer, Teran helped in 2022 with a coalition to defeat Republican Kari Lake and contribute to the victory of Democratic governor, secretary of state and attorney general, for the first time in decades in the entity.
