He Department of Justice, DOJ, informed the lawyers of at least one witness that they will not file charges against the Florida Republican Matt Gaetz after a years-long sex trafficking investigation, a source familiar with the matter told CNN.
According to the aforementioned media, senior officials contacted the lawyers of at least one witness to report on the decision not to prosecute the man who gave House Speaker Kevin McCarthy the most headaches during the vote to be elected speaker.
Gaetz has been under investigation for allegations of child sex trafficking for a couple of years. In October 2022 it was announced that the FBI seized the cell phone of the Republican representative in December 2020 to investigate whether the Republican sexually trafficked a 17-year-old girl. A former friend of Florida Rep. Joel Grenberg pleaded guilty to trafficking the same teen in exchange for helping the Justice Department investigate. The politician’s girlfriend also reached an agreement that gave him immunity from federal prosecution in exchange for her testimony.
Months ago it became known that the prosecution was stalled because federal investigators appeared to be deadlocked by concerns about the credibility of two key witnesses, as well as the lack of direct evidence implicating Gaerz, who He has repeatedly denied having had sexual relations with a minor.
The apparent decision by the Justice Department comes months after the Washington Post reported that career prosecutors internally recommended that Gaetz not be charged.
