Bill Barr warned that his former boss Donald Trump will “burn the Republican Party” and called for “new leadership”; This was revealed by the former attorney general through an article for the Substack publication by the former opinion editor and columnist for the New York Times, Bari Weiss, titled “Bill Barr: Trump Will Burn Down the GOP. It’s time for new leadership.”
Barr indicated that Trump had attributes as “establishing a position and his willingness to state ugly truths that many were afraid to tell” having “accurately diagnosed and given voice to the deep frustration of many working-class and middle-class Americans who were fed up with the excesses of progressive Democrats ; the shameless partisanship of the mainstream media; and the presumptuous condescension of elites who had mismanaged the country, sold them out, and seemed content to preside over America’s decline.”
He even indicated that the former president clearly “lacks the essential qualities to achieve the kind of unity and sweeping electoral victory in 2024 which are so necessary if we want to straighten our list of republics. It’s time for new leadership.”
Barr commented that Trump did not reach out to voters outside his base and that it was not a “fraud” that caused Trump to lose his reelection in 2020.
“The defining feature of our political landscape remains the sharp leftward jolt of the [P]I am a Democrat” and that threat “opens up a historic opportunity for the Republican Party: the chance to revive something like the old Reagan coalition, a mix of college-educated suburbanites and Republican leaning; culturally conservative working-class voters; and even some classical liberals who are repulsed by the authoritarianism of the left,” he said.
Barr wrote that the husband of Melania Trump is not up to the task of building a broad Reaganesque coalitionHe even cited Trump costing the Republican Party the 2021 Georgia Senate runoff that handed control of the Senate to Democrats. Furthermore, Barr said, “the poor performance of the Republican Party in the recent midterm elections was due in large part to the antics of Trump.”
In addition, Barr warned that while Trump’s base “probably no more than a quarter of the Republican Party,” Trump”[usa] their influence to extort and harass the rest of the party into submission. The threat is simple: Unless the rest of the party goes along with him, he will burn the whole house down by getting “his people out of him” out of the Republican Party.”
