Zara, belonging to the Spanish textile group Inditex, has hired the largest model in the brand’s history to present its new collection inspired by the movie ‘Barbie’, which will be launched this July, reports El Independiente.
It is about Ceval Omar, a transgender woman Norwegian of Somali originwhose figure oscillates between sizes XXL and 5XL, depending on the garment and the sizing.
The model, who has already collaborated successfully with firms such as Dolce & Gabbana and Nina Ricciin addition to appearing on the cover of magazines such as Vogue or ELLEnow represents Zara, wearing four of their outfits.
In his photos, you can see a minidress fuscia draped with strapless neckline and heeled sandals. Since pink is the protagonist of the collection, Omar also debuted pajamas in the same tone.
In addition, for the photo session, the model put on two monkeys: one denim and the other black, with a ‘cut-out’ accessory.
El Independiente managed to speak with Omar to ask him about his experience working with Zara. “I’ve always loved Barbie and of course like so many people I’ve always wanted to be like her, and Zara is an amazing company that is working to change and always improve so it couldn’t be a better collaboration,” says Ceval.
Likewise, Omar expressed his joy at being able to be “the direct reflection” of the change that is taking place in the fashion industry to move towards inclusion and diversity.
“I am very grateful that they chose me […] We all want to see that change in the world around us and we deserve it,” said Omar. “The people who don’t understand it are the ones who have always had the privilege of seeing themselves [en representaciones culturales como Barbie, por ejemplo]”. “We all should live free, with happiness and care“, he added.
However, with this step the firm has faced numerous criticisms, since in the ‘Barbie’ collection the maximum size is XXL, which for some garments is very below the size of Omarwith 114 centimeters chest, 106 waist and 119 hip.
Some consider it inappropriate that a plus-size model has been hired, while the Spanish average is not represented in Zara’s sizing.
