Nicaraguan police arrested opposition presidential hopeful Juan Sebastián Chamorro on Tuesday, some eight hours after the arrest of opposition pre-candidate Félix Maradiaga, authorities said in a statement.
According to police, Chamorro was arrested Tuesday night at his residence located southeast of the capital, Managua, as part of an investigation for carrying out acts that undermine independence, sovereignty, and self-determination, inciting foreign interference in internal affairs, calling for military interventions, and other charges.
He is also being investigated for organizing with financing from foreign powers to carry out acts of terrorism and destabilization, proposing and managing economic, commercial and financial blockades against the country and its institutions, demanding, exalting and applauding the imposition of sanctions against the State of Nicaragua and its citizens, and harming the supreme interests of the nation.
Olama Hurtado, Chamorro’s niece, confirmed to journalists that the politician was arrested by police officers who broke into his house after 19:00 local time (01:00 GMT) to carry out a search.
