A Walmart manager who shot six colleagues to death at a Walmart store in Virginia appeared to have picked out the people he was going to attack and re-shot some who had already been shot and appeared dead, said a person who was present when the shooting began.

Employee Jessica Wilczewski said workers were gathered in a break room at the store to start their night shift late Tuesday when crew chief Andre Bing walked in and opened fire with a handgun. Although another witness described Bing firing indiscriminately, Wilczewski said she observed the manager target certain people.

“The way he was acting was like he was out hunting,” Wilczewski told The Associated Press on Thursday. “The way he looked at people’s faces and the way he did what he did was he was choosing people.”

He added that he saw him attack people who were already shot on the ground.

“What I do know is that he made sure that whoever he wanted dead was dead,” he insisted. “He came back and shot people who were already dead, just to make sure.”

Wilczewski added that she had only been working at the store for five days and she didn’t know who Bing got along with or had problems with. She said that being a new employee may have been the reason she was spared from it.

Wilczewski said that after the shooting began, a coworker sitting next to her pushed her under the table to hide her. She said that at one point, Bing ordered her to come out from under the table, but when she saw who it was, she told him, “Jessie, go home.” She added that she then slowly got up and ran out of the store.

The shooter was already dead when officers arrived Tuesday night at the store in Chesapeake, the state’s second-largest city near the Virginia coast with about 250,000 residents. Authorities said he apparently shot himself. The police try to determine the motives for the killing, while the former co-workers try to make sense of the shooting.

The shooting attack Tuesday night in Chesapeake was the second mass shooting in Virginia this month. Three University of Virginia football players were shot and killed on a bus on November 13 as they were returning to school from a field trip. Two more students were injured.

The shooting at the Walmart store also came days after a person opened fire at a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, killing five and wounding 17.

The Tuesday night attack also evoked another attack at a Walmart in 2019, when a gunman wanting to target Mexicans opened fire at a store in El Paso, Texas, killing 23 people.
