A person in Washington state won the Powerball lottery and will walk away with $754.6 million.
The winning numbers of the draw made on Monday were 05, 11, 22, 23, 69 and the additional Powerball 07.
Monday’s winner was the first to match the numbers since Nov. 19. Because it went so long without a winner, the prize accumulated to become the ninth largest in American history.
Lottery officials said Tuesday that one ticket sold had all six of the correct numbers, and that the number of tickets sold was so high that the prize exceeded a previously estimated $747 million.
The winner can choose to receive all the money together and in that case they would receive 407.2 million. If the winner chooses to receive his prize in installments, there would be 29 successive annual payments that would increase by 5%.
Both amounts are before taxes, Powerball said.
The prize for the next Powerball, which will take place on Wednesday, is $20 million, according to the lottery’s website.
Due to recent increases in interest rates, annuities have been increasing compared to previous years. Most winners choose to receive the entire prize at once.
The minuscule odds of winning – one in 292.2 million – are designed to increase the loot and thus attract more buyers. The strategy recently worked, as a person in Maine won the Mega Millions jackpot for $1.35 billion in January and in December in California a person won the Powerball for a record $2.04 billion. So far no one has come forward to collect those two amounts.
Powerball is played in 45 states plus Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.
