It’s is a very sad and disappointing day not just for America’s whole Black community, but also for rest of the people of the entire nation. New York’s First black Mayor, David Dinkins, has unfortunately left his followers along after his demise.
He died at 93. David was responsible for many good things that happened in the state. But, he served just one term as the mayor of the state for many reasons including the mishandling of race riots, his stubborn unemployment policies, and because of increasing number of crime rate in the state.
His death was confirmed by the New York City Police Department. As per the information received by the sources, he died because of natural causes at his home.
Dinkins had a calm and courtly nature and was keen of playing tennis and loved formal wear for most of the occasions. He was a complete personality than both of his predecessors who were not so polite.
A Mayor with Ups and Downs
Dinkins was undoubtedly a calm and composed person but his city inherited completely different behavior. New York has a very crime rate under his tenure. There were many cases of theft, murders, etc. The unemployment in the city was very high during his term.
He raised taxes to employ more number of police officers into the country. Dinkins did a lot for the city without any doubt. He spent millions of dollars to revitalize neglected housing. He further invested to clean the famous Time Square area.
He did got many credits and praises for the things he authorized for the city. But, unfortunately, despite doing all these things, he was unable to secure a second term as a mayor of the country. He lost by a very large majority of votes.
Many political critics and officials term Dinkins lost in the election to his handling of the Crown Heights riots in Brooklyn in 1991. The riots began after a 7-year-old black boy killed in a motorcade. The riots continued for three days by young boys and resulted in death of another boy who was stabbed to death.
Years later, Dinkins also blamed the police authorities for the mishaps and the riots. He also took some blame on his head and stated that someone stopped him from doing his duty.

Dinkins was born in Trenton on July10, 1927. He moved with his mother after she divorced her husband. He returned back to his hometown to attend the high school. From the early age, he was a victim of discrimination when he black kids were not allowed to enter into the swimming pool.
He was also denied a bus ride as the section for black boys was full in the bus. While attending Howard University, it is said that Dinkins wore a Turban to enter into the segregated movie theaters.
Soon he got a degree in Mathematics and married his college love. With the help of his Father in Law, Dinkins entered into a political club and it was when he decided to study law.
He participated in 1989 Mayor Elections and defeated Koch with a good margin. The whole nation is now remembering Dinkins for his work towards upliftment of the society and the measures he took to eliminate discrimination,
