Has the tiny virus made big Trump unfit for Presidency? Nancy to claim so legally

Speaker Nancy Pelosi strikes a major blow to the already deepening political crisis of Donald Trump. She is giving air to a thought which was already there in the US political arena. A few senators were discussing to remove Trump and place Mike Pence as commander in chief after he was infected with the virus. Pelosi is seeking to materialise that thought by rolling out legislation to invoke 25th Amendment.

Her step could be a major blow to Trump’s campaign. He is already facing a credibility crisis on the grounds of coronavirus mishandling and racial discrimination. The image of a physically weak president will further distance voters from him. Nancy is duly supported by other senators including some Republicans also.

Trump has dismissed her proposal. He has been very persistent in projecting his health as perfect. Health is a parameter to claim votes, he can not afford to look bad at it.

Nancy set to invoke the 25th Amendment

The 1967 provision that was introduced in the American Constitution after the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The law ensures a smooth transition of power in case the President dies or becomes incapacitated.

It says that either Vice President, Cabinet or the congress can declare the president as unable to discharge his duties. The vice president assumes charge from the same moment. The President, however, can object the proceedings by giving a counter written declaration.

Nancy Pelosi along with Republican Jamie Raskin and other Democrats is preparing the plot for transfer of power. Jamie Raskin is a constitutional scholar who believes in the integrity of the constitution.

Trump attacked back on Nancy Pelosi. He tweeted “Crazy Nancy is the one who should be under observation. They don’t call her Crazy for nothing!”

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other Trump aides have also dismissed the proposal. McConnell termed it an absurd idea. Nancy Pelosi is still determined to roll out the legislation in the Senate. But it remains to be seen if it will be approved because Trump is projecting proper health condition. He has even visited his office.

    She questioned Trump’s health details

The speaker Pelosi is not convinced by the rosy picture of Trump’s health that he and the White House are presenting before the public. She has a reason to disbelieve. The information shared by the White House is highly contradictory.

Nancy has demanded for more detailed information on the president’s health. She said that nation should know about their top leader’s health condition. There should be greater transparency and honesty in the details shared.

Till now, Trump administration has acted with the miser’s hand when it comes to details on his illness. His aides skip basic and specific information like the exact time of his diagnosis, his blood oxygen level etc.

Nancy could mine these bits of information to prove that Trump is not as healthy as he projects. It will lay the ground for transfer of power to vice president.

What’s the likelihood of legislation being approved? Why Nancy is pushing it?

Most likely, the legislation will not get approval in the Senate before the election. The house is not in its legislative business. So, the bill will note be voted or taken seriously in either house. Certainly, it will not be passed. Even if it were to be voted, Republicans will oppose the motion.

One may ask then, what is the use of rollout and why Nancy Pelosi is pushing it?

Politics is all about perception. If the speaker can shape a public perception that Trump is unfit for the presidency and that too because of the disease he consistently downplayed, Trump will be reduced to nothing. Voters look for certainty and Trump’s disease makes him so uncertain. Voters are very quick to identify both leaders and jokers. Trump’s recent frustration can establish him as a mock figure. Nancy’s move has gravity to ruin his political career.
