“We are going to use all the means, all the tools that the State has given us to defend ourselves,” emphasized the general director of the Police.
Three police officers were shot this Wednesday after a violent confrontation in which a criminal was shot dead in the commune of La Florida, Santiago, capital of Chile.
General Ricardo Yanez, director of the Chilean Carabineros, informed the local media that the troops “went to a place where supposedly there was a drug transaction and they were greeted with bullets, [pero] repelled the attack.”
The media detail that the carabineros received information that some individuals were mobilizing with weapons. Seeing that, in effect, a subject was carrying a weapon, the uniformed officers began an operation, after which they began a confrontation with the alleged criminals.
Among the wounded, who they are out of life risk, there is a first sergeant with a ballistic impact on the right elbow; a second sergeant with a ballistic impact to the left forearm; and a corporal first with a bullet in his left hand.
On Wednesday afternoon, two of the three agents underwent surgery at the Carabineros Hospital, according to the BioBio portal.
“We are facing a crime that clearly has firepower, which it’s much more violent“, stressed Yanez, who, however, stressed that they will maintain their desire to “continue fighting crime.”
In the operation, the other person involved was arrested and a firearm was seized. In the case of the man killed, he was identified as Abraham Lagos and had a conviction for robbery with intimidation.
“To those who dare, They will face the use of weapons by the Carabineros (…) We are going to use all the means, all the tools that the State has given us to defend ourselves and the community,” Yanez said.
In recent weeks, three police officers have lost their lives while carrying out police procedures, which has caused a security crisis that has shaken the Government and has generated multiple criticisms from the opposition.
