The authorities said that the hostages at the Cuenca penitentiary, whose number was not detailed, are in good condition.
The Ecuadorian authorities confirmed this Wednesday a riot in the Turi prison, in the Andean city of Cuencawith several guards held.
The information was confirmed, according to the local press, by the National Service for Comprehensive Attention to Persons Deprived of Liberty (SNAI), the state department in charge of guarding and managing Ecuador’s prisons.
The SNAI did not detail the number of guards retained, but said that they are in good condition. Furthermore, he explained that the riot, with the inmates perched on the roofs of the penitentiary centeris a protest against the intervention that the authorities carried out shortly before in the Latacunga prison, capital of Cotopaxi.
Shortly before, in videos broadcast by the media, a strong presence of uniformed personnel and the presence of several military vehicles could be seen in the areas near the prison.
In this prison, 20 prisoners died during a riot that occurred in April 2022. This is the last of the interventions made by the government of conservative Guillermo Lasso in the prisons of Ecuador, with the aim of disarming the criminal gangs that operate in them and that have left more than 400 prisoners dead in massacres between rivals since 2020.
