“This alleged planned attack threatened lives and would have left thousands of Marylanders in the dark and cold,” said the US Attorney for the District of Maryland.
The US Department of Justice accused a neo-Nazi man and a woman on Monday of conspiring to destroy several electrical installations in the state of Maryland driven by an “ideology of racial hatred.”
According to authorities, Brandon Russell of the state of Florida posted links to maps of electrical substations, while Sarah Clendaniel of Maryland assisted with the plan, securing a rifle and identifying five substations. The woman herself stated that, if they had managed to carry out the attack on several of the targets, they would have “completely destroyed” an entire city. “I should have made that happen”he claimed.
Along with the filed complaint, it was further stated that from at least June 2022 to the present Russell has conspired to execute attacks against critical infrastructure, specifically electrical substations, due to “violent extremist beliefs on racial or ethnic grounds“.
“This alleged planned attack threatened lives and would have left thousands of Marylanders in the dark and cold“U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, Erek Barron, said, claiming they will use all legal means necessary to stop the violence and “hate-fueled attacks.”
Russell, 27, and Clendaniel, 34, were arrested last Friday and, if found guilty, could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.
