The water in the Grand Canal of Venice, in Italy, was dyed green this Sunday, forcing the local authorities to call an urgent meeting to investigate the origin and cause of the strange coloration, reports the Italian press.
The stain appeared in the morning at a point near the famous Rialto bridge and then it began to spread through the Grand Canal and other waterways in the city.
The incident occurred when the popular Vogalonga rowing regattaan event that is celebrated annually as a sign of rejection before the increasing presence of motor boats in the canals of Venice.
At first, there was speculation that it was a demonstration by environmental groupsbut preliminary results from water samples taken by law enforcement indicate that the font would be some kind of ‘tracer’a liquid that is injected into pipes or urban drains in the event of a leak to understand the route followed by the water infiltration.
On the other hand, the authorities assure that the substance is not toxic nor does it represent a danger to human health. Pending the final results of the water analyzes and the data collected in the investigation, the local government will hold a new meeting this Monday.
