Washington describes the Arctic as a region of “vital strategic importance” for its interests.
The Joe Biden administration is preparing to create a position of ambassador for Special Affairs for the Arctic. The post will be established in order to promote US interests in the region, the US State Department announced on Friday. The measure requires Senate approval.
In its statement, the State Department called the Arctic “a peaceful, stable, prosperous, and cooperative region of vital strategic importance to the United States.” The Special Affairs ambassador will advance US policies there, interact with counterparts from both Arctic and non-Arctic nations and indigenous groups, and work closely with domestic actors, the statement said.
On June 8, the seven Western members of the Arctic Council made a decision to operate on a limited scale, without Russia. The next day, the Russian ambassador in Washington, Anatoli Antonov, stated that it is impossible to resolve Arctic issues without Moscow’s presence in that body.
