The clothing represents an evolution of the monetary system of El Salvador, from 1892 to the present, as explained by the contestant.
On Wednesday, the preliminary gala and presentation of typical costumes of the contestants of the 71st edition of Miss Universe, prior to the final to be held next Saturday, took place in New Orleans, Louisiana (USA).
At the event, the representative of El Salvador, Alejandra Guajardo, surprised by presenting an outfit that alludes to the bitcoin cryptocurrency as a national costume.
In his social networks, Guajardo explained that his suit, all gold, is about “the evolution of the Salvadoran monetary system.” On his back you can see a 1 colon coin, while in his hand he carries a cane with the bitcoin logo.
“The colon became the official currency of El Salvador from 1892 until it was replaced by the dollar on January 1, 2001. Being a country with a true vision of positive change for the future, El Salvador became the first country in the world to use cryptocurrencies as legal tender, when it adopted bitcoin in 2021,” Guajardo justified.
The contestant added that the evolution of the monetary system in the Central American country “is a testimony of the way in which Salvadorans have transformed their economy at different stages of their history.”
In June 2021, the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador approved the law that allows bitcoin to be used as legal tender in the Central American country and three months later it entered into force.
Although there are those who supported his initiative, most of the reactions in the networks consider that the suit was a “disappointment” and “disaster”, due to the losses that the legalization of bitcoin has caused to El Salvador.
Phenomenal financial history from the past to today with the bitcoin digital system and its digital currency.

Miss Universe El Salvador 2021, Alejandra Gavidia wore a dress in protest against a femicide state. Miss Universe El Salvador 2022, Alejandra Guajardo wore a dress with the Bitcoin cryptocurrency logo that has caused endless losses. Total disappointment. pic.twitter.com/iU9g5iX2ZH

I honestly believe that the biggest disaster was that typical costume that has nothing of it, it does not represent our country, our culture is more than that. What a pity.

El Salvador makes a fool of itself in Miss Universe by presenting an allegory to Bitcoin as a typical costume, a cryptocurrency that has represented only losses for the country and has bankrupted thousands around the world. pic.twitter.com/Zui3AYr5Vk
