The far-right is accused of “abuse of power and improper use of the media” for exposing his unfounded theory against the reliability of electronic ballot boxes to 40 ambassadors.
The judge of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Benedito Goncalves, rapporteur of the case against Jair Bolsonaro, voted in favor of disqualifying the far-right ex-president for eight years.
Bolsonaro is accused of abuse of political power and misuse of the media during a meeting with foreign ambassadors in July 2022, three months before the presidential elections, in which he exposed his unfounded theory against the reliability of electronic ballot boxes. The meeting was broadcast on the official government television channel.
The trial against the former president began last week, and was resumed on Tuesday with the vote of Goncalves, who stressed that “it is not possible to turn a blind eye” before the “undemocratic effects of violent speeches and lies that call into question the credibility of the Electoral Justice.”
He also considered that that meeting between Bolsonaro and the diplomatic corps “had an electoral purpose” to influence “the electorate and national and international public opinion using the public structure and prerogatives of the position of President of the Republic.”
Goncalves estimated that Bolsonaro’s statements led to a “banalization of the coup”and that materialized in the assaults on the headquarters of the three powers in Brasilia on January 8.
The trial was suspended and will resume on Thursday with the analysis of the other six magistrates that make up the TSE.
