    “Russia is my home”: a Cameroonian with a Russian passport makes his World Cup debut

    Gael Ondoua is the only player with Russian citizenship who is playing the tournament.

    Cameroonian midfielder Gael Ondoua, who also has a Russian passport, made his debut this Thursday at the Qatar 2022 World Cup after replacing Martin Hongla in the 68th minute in the match against Switzerland, which the African team lost 1-0.

    It was the fifth game in which the player, born in Cameroon and who currently plays for Hannover 96 in the second division of the Bundesliga, has worn the shirt of his national team since he was called up for the first time last March.

    In comments to the Russian portal RB Sport prior to the match, the footballer stressed that he feels proud to represent the Eurasian country in this edition of the World Cup, where he is the only player who has Russian citizenship.

    “First of all, I will represent the Cameroonian team. But I always say openly: Russia is my home, I have a Russian document. And it’s nice to be able to represent the Russian people in such a big tournament,” he stressed.

    Gael Ondoua was born in Cameroon, but he lived in Russia since he was 9 years old, where his father worked at the embassy of the African country. After training at the Lokomotiv Moscow academy, he played for clubs like Anzhi de Makhachkala. Likewise, he also played in the lower categories of CSKA Moscow, where he played a game with the first team.
