The attacker was a 25-year-old Hispanic man who was caught and taken into custody. He acted on his behalf and had a criminal record.
An 86-year-old man was shot dead and at least three other people were seriously injured this Saturday in an attack carried out by a man who, according to police, he was shooting randomly from a moped against cars and pedestrians in Queens, New York.
Authorities detained a 25-year-old Hispanic man, who also carried out other attacks in which no fatalities or injuries were reported.
The shooting began shortly before 11:30 a.m., when the 86-year-old man was shot multiple times in the Richmond Hill area. He later he died in a hospital.
About a mile away and less than 10 minutes later, a 63-year-old man was shot in the shoulder and taken to a nearby hospital, where police said he was in serious but stable condition.
A few minutes later, reports the AP agency, the assailant shot a 61-year-old man in the torso. He was admitted to the Jamaica Medical Center Hospital and his condition was critical. The third injured was another 44-year-old man.
According to authorities, the suspect is a 25-year-old Hispanic male with a previous arrest in the city.
“We don’t know the reason, but it seems random,” Joseph Kenny of the New York Police Department’s Detective Bureau told reporters.
According to Kenny, the videos and testimonies collected show that the man was not looking for anyone in particular and that he parently dedicated himself to shooting different people while riding a moped.
Upon arresting the youth, the agents recovered a 9-millimeter weon, a magazine, and ammunition.
In addition, Police Commissioner Edward Caban reported: “It was a self-acting individual who shot four people, one of whom unfortunately died.”
“The shooter used an illegal moped that did not have a license plate and thus moved from one location to the next,” he added while confirming that he was also responsible for previously recorded shootings.
