During his arrest, the defendant tried to strip one of the agents of his weapon.
NFL player Cameron Batson, receiver for the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad, was charged with five counts after confronting police officers when he was arrested this Saturday in Georgia, Fox reports.
According to reports, the events occurred around 2:00 a.m. (local time), after a traffic officer called Batson to a stop for driving, allegedly drunk, speeding and not staying in his lane.
According to the agents involved, the defendant “fought violently with the officer” when trying to resist and tried to strip him of his pistol before returning to his vehicle to flee. During the altercation, one of the policemen fired his weapon, without hurting anyone.
If convicted on charges of assault, aggravated assault, aggravated assault on an officer in the course of his duties, attempted escape and attempted theft of a weapon from a public official, Batson, 27, could face several decades in prison.
“We have been made aware of an overnight incident involving Cameron Batson and are currently gathering information from law enforcement. […]. We take this matter seriously and have no further comment at this time,” the team stated after the incident.
