The American had been sentenced to death for beating, torturing and strangling his Egyptian father. Saudi Arabia is one of the countries that uses capital punishment the most in the world.
Capital punishment is common in Saudi Arabia. On Wednesday, an American national convicted of torturing and killing his Egyptian father was executed, the official Saudi press agency SPA said.
“Bishoy Sharif Naji Naseef, of American nationality, was executed in the Riyadh region,” the agency added, quoting a press release from the interior ministry of the Saudi kingdom, one of the countries which has the most recourse to capital punishment around the world.
A Saudi court has found that Bishoy Sharif Naji Naseef, whose age has not been specified, beat, tortured and strangled his Egyptian father and mutilated his body, according to the same source. He also used drugs and attempted to kill another person.
The mode of execution has not been specified, but decapitation is often used when carrying out the death penalty.
In Washington, State Department spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters, “we are aware of the information (about the execution) and are monitoring the situation but we don’t have details.”
He added that a US consulate official last visited Bishoy Sharif Naji Naseef in July.
91 sentenced to death since the beginning of the year
More than 1,000 people on death row have been executed since King Salman and his son Mohammed, the de facto ruler of the kingdom, came to power in 2015, according to a report by the British organization Reprieve and ESOHR (European Saudi Organization for Human Rights) published earlier this year.
This year, 91 people sentenced to death have so far been executed, according to an AFP count based on official announcements. In 2022, there were 147 people, more than double the previous year. Among these, 81 convicted of terrorism were executed the same day, sparking an international outcry.
Saudi Arabia is regularly singled out by international NGOs who accuse it of violating human rights.
