An Islamic State group leader was killed in a US raid in Syria on Sunday, the US military command for the Middle East said.
A leader of the Islamic State organization was killed during an American strike in Syria carried out using a drone, indicated, Sunday July 9, the American military command in the Middle East (Centcom).
The raid, carried out on Friday in eastern Syria, resulted in the death of Osama al-Muhajer, Centcom boss General Michael Kurilla said in a statement. “We have made it clear that we remain committed to defeating the Islamic State group across the region,” he insisted.
“The Islamic State organization remains a threat, not only to the region but also beyond,” he added.
According to Centcom, no civilians were killed in this operation, but the forces of the international coalition, led by the United States, reported one civilian injured.
Drones “harassed by Russian military aviation”
The strike “was carried out by the same (American drones) MQ-9 which had (…) been harassed by Russian military aviation”, according to the same source. On Thursday, Russian military planes harassed American drones taking part in operations against the Islamic State organization, according to the Pentagon. It was, according to the same source, the second incident of this nature in less than 24 hours.
Since the territorial defeat of the terrorist group in Syria in 2019, several hundred American soldiers, deployed in the northeast of the country as part of the anti-jihadist coalition, continue to fight alongside the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF, dominated by the Kurds) and to target alleged members of the organization.
Russia, for its part, entered the war militarily in 2015 to support the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, helping him regain large swaths of territory.
