The six-year term of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador could become the period with the highest number of murders in the history of Mexico, since so far 143,976 murders have been recorded.
From January 1 to 13 of this year, a total of 1,003 intentional homicidesbeing the seventh day of the most violent month, with 109 murders, according to information from the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC).
In this period, most homicides were concentrated in the state of Guanajuatowith 101 fatalities, followed by Mexico state with 86, Chihuahua75, Michoacan with 73, lower california73 and Jalisco67. On the other hand, in Mexico City there were at least 27 deaths.
Last December, the undersecretary of the SSPC, Ricardo Mejia Berdeja, reported that in the month of November there was a decrease in cases of intentional homicides, with 23.5% fewer victims. Likewise, he specified that during the six-year term of Felipe Calderon, murders increased by 192.8%, while under Enrique Pena Nieto they increased by 59%.
Regarding the current government headed by Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Mejia Berdeja assured that, in the period from 2019 to November 2022, cases decreased by 10.6%. However, data shown by the Mexican consultancy TResearch indicate that Lopez Obrador’s six-year term could become the one with which highest number of homicides in the modern history of Mexicosince so far 143,976 cases have been registered.
