On Wednesday, the internal election of Morena, the party founded by the president, ends.
The president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, announced this Wednesday that he will give a baton of command to whoever wins the presidential candidacy of the ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena), with a view to the general elections that will be held on June 2, next year.
“I want to tell you: here I give you this cane that represents the desires for change and transformation of millions of Mexicans, who are the protagonists of this story that we represent, I have been leading the process, now it is your turn to move forward,” said the president.
Wednesday will be a decisive day in the political history of Mexico, as the internal election of the coalition headed by Morena and in which the Labor Party (PT) and the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM) participate.
President Lopez Obrador mentioned that tomorrow the winner of the Morena survey will be announced. “I have not tipped the scales, the tip is over,” he reiterated. “I’m going to support whoever wins the poll (…) and I’m going to hand him the baton,” he added. pic.twitter.com/8KHLACG0Xt

The candidates are, on behalf of Morena, the former head of Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, who leads the polls; the former chancellor Marcelo Ebrard; and the former Secretary of the Interior, Adam Augusto Lopez; while the former deputy Gerardo Fernandez participates on behalf of the PT; and for the PVEM, the senator Manuel Velasco.
The definition was given based on polls that have already been carried out and whose results will be announced on Wednesday, so in the previous hours a climate of strong political expectation has increased.
End of era
In that sense, Lopez Obrador recalled that, unlike what happened for decades, he did not intervene in any way to elect the ruling party’s candidate, and will limit himself to supporting whoever wins.
“As a leading member of the transformation movement, I will support and hand over the baton, not the presidential sash, to lead the movement,” he said.
Once it is known who won the official nomination, he added, it will be up to him to continue governing for a year in which he will work to help the people, finish works and consolidate the transformation which began in the country when he assumed the presidency at the end of 2018.
Regarding the handing over of the baton, he specified that it will be a party ceremony that will take place tomorrow night or Thursday, since on Friday he will leave for a tour of Colombia and Chile.
“I have to wait for the results and then I’m going to make a statement. I don’t know exactly how (the ceremony) is going to be because we have to see what the winner, man, woman, sister or brother thinks, but yes. I would like to close that stage“, said.
