The European Commission announced Thursday 17 million euros in humanitarian aid for the most vulnerable people in Haiti and the Caribbean islands, which have seen their situation worsened by the coronavirus pandemic.
“The EU continues to provide humanitarian aid directly to the most vulnerable groups. In Haiti, as in the rest of the Caribbean, recurrent natural disasters aggravate their situation, which has also been exacerbated by the coronavirus,” said the Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic.
In this sense, he insisted that, with this announcement, the EU is increasing its support to the Caribbean region, at a particularly complicated time due to the coronavirus pandemic. Specifically, 14 million will be distributed to Haiti to guarantee food to sectors in extreme need and offer protection to migrants and victims of gang violence. Funds will also be earmarked to increase the response to natural disasters.
Three million euros will be channeled to the other Caribbean islands for emergency preparedness and response to natural disasters in at-risk communities.
