King Felipe VI proposed the leader of the Popular Party, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, to form a government

The popular leader has, for the moment, 172 supports, which would be insufficient to be elected president.

The King of Spain Felipe VI has proposed to the leader of the PP, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, to form a government as communicated to the president of Congress, Francina Armengol. The popular leader has, for the moment, 172 supports, which would be insufficient to be elected president.

Feijoo accepted the commission, but that investiture is currently doomed to failure, because the PP It only has 172 votes in favor in Congress (those of his group plus those of Vox, UPN and Coalicion Canaria) and has 178 against him (those of the PSOE, Sumar, Junts, ERC, EH Bildu, PNV and BNG).

For his part, the Prime Minister and PSOE candidate, Pedro Sanchez, stated that he believes that his party “is in a position to gather the required parliamentary support” to reissue a progressive Executive.

The PNV has confirmed that this Tuesday it has received the first call from the PSOE to obtain its support. Sanchez has reminded the PP that the investiture is not an “exhibition procedure” and has said that the “efforts and contortions” of the popular are “legitimate” but “wasteful”.

    what’s coming

The date of the investiture debate will be set by the president of Congress, the socialist Francina Armengol. In his pearance before the King’s decision was officially announced, the leader of the PP has suggested that it would not seem right to him that the date was very closebecause he would need time to speak previously with all the parliamentary groups and these are not even constituted.

The monarch made this decision after a round of consultations with the leaders of the parties with parliamentary representation, as established by the Spanish Constitution.

The current acting president of the Government of Spain, the socialist Pedro Sanchez, had also shown this Tuesday, like Feijoo, his willingness to stand for investiture because he considers that he has more parliamentary support, although he obtained fewer seats in the elections ( 121).

This is the first time in which two candidates sought to go to the investiture in Spain.

The king has chosen to propose the one who currently has the most support, since Sanchez starts from 152 seats (his PSOE party and the left-wing Sumar formation) and must sew pacts with other forces to achieve a majority.

In a press conference after meeting with the monarch, Feijoo admitted that “no party has an absolute majority”but considered that with the support of 172 deputies it is only four (176) away from the absolute majority.

According to the Spanish Constitution, it corresponds to the king, after consultation with the parties with parliamentary representation, to propose a candidate for the investiture as president of the Government, who must be voted on by the Congress of Deputies.

The candidate proposed by the Head of State first needs absolute majority vote (176 yeses) or the simple one (more yeses than noes) in a second, to be held 48 hours later.

If, after both, it does not obtain sufficient support, new votes may be held, but if within two months of the first vote no candidate succeeds, there will be new elections in Spain.
