The 7.8 magnitude earthquake and its successive aftershocks have left fatalities and caused the destruction of buildings in different cities.
The Italian Department of Civil Protection has issued “an alert about the possible arrival of tsunami waves” on the country’s coasts after the strong earthquake of magnitude 7.8 that shook the southern part of Turkey early Monday morning, followed by aftershocks, and which has left fatalities and caused the destruction of buildings in different cities.
“It is recommended to get away from the coastal areas, go to the highest area nearby and follow the indications of the local authorities,” reads the agency’s statement, which adds: “The alert indicates the possibility of real danger for people close to the coast, especially if they are located in areas not very high, or even lower, than sea level”.
So far, the quake has left at least 50 dead and hundreds injured in southern Turkey, while it is reported that people could be trapped in the rubble.
According to LBCI Lebanon Englishthe earthquake has been felt in Syria, Lebanon, Greece, Cyprus, Iraq and Iran, as well as other places in Europe and the Middle East.
