Israel attacks Gaza after incendiary balloon fire

Israeli fighter jets struck a weapons manufacturing center in Gaza overnight in response to the launching of incendiary balloons into Israeli territory, the military said early Friday.

No casualties were reported so far in the attack, which the army said targeted a facility used by the insurgent group Hamas, which rules the Strip, to research and develop weapons.

It was the third time Israel carried out airstrikes in Gaza since the end of the 11-day war against Hamas in May. Each came after activists mobilized by the group launched incendiary devices that set fires in nearby Israeli farming communities.

Hamas uses these tactics to pressure Israel and international mediators to ease the crippling blockade imposed on Gaza when the group seized control of the territory from rival Palestinian forces in 2007. Israel vowed to respond to even minor attacks.

Egyptian and international mediators have been trying to secure the informal cease-fire agreement that ended the latest war. In recent days, Israel eased restrictions to allow in Qatari-funded fuel, expanded the fishing zone in Gaza and allowed more cross-border trade.

Israel says these measures are contingent on Hamas maintaining calm on the border.
