    Iran arrests Baha’i followers

Iranian intelligence said several members of the Baha’i religious group had been arrested for alleged spying for Israel. Secret service officials have arrested agents “of the central core of the Baha’i spy party”. The group collected and passed on secret information on behalf of Israel, the secret service said on state broadcaster IRIB. The Baha’i were also instructed by Israel to “infiltrate educational institutions at various levels, particularly kindergartens and schools across the country,” it said.

Details of the arrested Baha’i were not given, but they are believed to be Iranian nationals.

    Persecuted religious minority in Iran

The mystical Bahai religion is not recognized in Iran and may not be practiced. The Baha’i emerged from Shia Islam in Iran in the mid-19th century. The persecution of the Baha’i in Iran began as early as the 19th century. The Islamic Republic has been taking systematic action against them since the Islamic Revolution (1979). In 1983 the Baha’i religion was banned in Iran.

According to their own statements, the Baha’i have more than five million members worldwide, around 300,000 of them in Iran. The center of the Baha’i community is the Shrine of the Bab in Haifa, Israel. It happens again and again that Baha’i in Iran are accused of being spies for Israel.

A special feature of the Baha’i religion: it accepts all other religions and believes that they build on each other. They call this the principle of progressive divine revelation. The individual founders of religions such as Moses, Buddha, Jesus or Mohammed see them as respective so-called manifestations of God in history.
