The head of the National Assembly recalled that “El Pollo” is a fugitive from Venezuelan justice and that Spain did not comply with international treaties.
The president of the National Assembly (AN) of Venezuela, Jorge Rodriguez, referred to the recent extradition of the Venezuelan ex-military and politician Hugo ‘El Pollo’ Carvajal from Spain to the US and stated that “hopefully” the Government of Joe Biden hand him over to the Venezuelan authorities, because he is a fugitive and wanted by the justice system of his country.
“Hopefully the US will hand it over, Spain did not do it and it should have done itin accordance with the extradition treaties that Venezuela has with different countries in the world,” Rodriguez said at a press conference in Caracas where he was asked about this case.
The head of parliament added that he hopes that Washington, “hand over to Venezuela a criminal as is the case of Hugo Carvajal that he is being required by the Venezuelan justice system to answer for several crimes”.

In 2021, the Venezuelan Public Ministry submitted an extradition request to the Spanish authorities, accusing Carvajal of the crimes of “treason, continued conspiracy, financing of terrorism and association”due to his alleged involvement in plans to assassinate President Nicolas Maduro.

Carvajal was arrested for the first time in Spain in April 2019at the request of the US, but in September of that year he was released because the Spanish Justice considered that the charges against him were too vague and the extradition request was politically motivated.
In November 2019, the National Court agreed to extradite Carvajal to the US and, in March 2020, the Government of Spain approved the process. However, the ex-soldier remained fugitive from Justice and in hiding until he was arrested in Madrid, on September 9, 2021.
