On Thursday, the president gave the ‘baton of command’ to the leader who will aspire to the presidency, in 2024, for the ruling party.
The president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, announced this Friday that he has finished his stage as leader of the movement that led him to win the elections in 2018 and that he will now continue under the command of presidential candidate Claudia Sheinbaum.
“I have finished my cycle as leader of the transformation movement, now the direction of the movement is in the hands of Claudia,” the president said during his usual press conference.
The president was questioned about the uncertainty generated by former Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, Sheinbaum’s main rival and who at the last minute withdrew from the internal race with complaints of multiple irregularities.
On Monday, Ebrard will announce whether or not he leaves the ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena) and if he runs for president under the acronym of the Citizen Movement party.
“I already explained about Marcelo: he is a good person, in a broad sense. He is a very prepared man, he has a lot of political experience and he is my friend. He is in complete freedom,” he said.
He also considered that we must get used to the fact that democracy is plurality, not a single thought, and that is why the right to dissent must always be guaranteed.
“Freedom is not implored, freedom is conquered. I wish all leaders were rebels,” he said, although he clarified that the most important thing is to trust the feelings and opinions of the people.
In this way he made reference to the validity of the five surveys that were carried out at the national level and in which the majority of the people consulted opted for Sheinbaum as a presidential candidate.
