The “Nightjet” of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) was passing through the Terfen Tunnel near Innsbruck when a ruptured catenary caused a fire. The catenary fell on vehicles that were being transported on a car wagon on the night train “NJ420”. As a result, the cars caught fire, emergency services reported. The train could not go any further.
Large-scale operation at the tunnel
About 20 fire crews responded to extinguish the flames and rescue the passengers. 151 people were brought to safety from the “Nightjet”, as announced by the state of Tyrol. 33 of them were slightly injured, they allegedly suffered smoke inhalation. All people who did not need medical care were taken to Innsbruck by bus, where sleeping arrangements were made. The ÖBB tweeted: “The rescue chain and evacuation worked well.”
According to a railway spokesman, the night train left Vienna on Wednesday evening. After a train split, he was scheduled to arrive in Hamburg and Amsterdam on Thursday morning. The affected route in the municipality of Fritzens was initially closed.
