Three fires are currently underway around Athens, as the country, like others in Europe, is hit by a dome of intense heat.
Greek firefighters continue this Tuesday for the second day in a row their fight against forest fires near Athens. In a tweetGerald Darmanin announced that France was sending personnel to help Greece: two Canadair, a reconnaissance aircraft and eighteen firefighters.
“At the request of the President of the Republic, Civil Security is sending a support mission to Greece which is facing very large fires, as part of the European Union’s civil protection mechanism”, wrote the Minister of Interior.
Residents evacuated
Several fires broke out on Monday around Athens, the most violent being in the Dervenohoria forest 50 km north of the Greek capital where 140 firefighters are operating, supported by six water bombers and a helicopter.
As a result, many residents were forced to leave their homes in the seaside areas hit by the heat wave. Like part of Europe, Greece has been affected since last Friday by a heat wave with a peak of 44.2°C recorded in the region of Thebes (center), according to the National Observatory of Athens.
Last summer, when the Gironde was ravaged by fires, Greece, like other European countries, sent reinforcements to France.
