Mekelle: Second air strike hit the capital of Tigray Region against TPLF

The capital of the Ethiopian region of Tigray, Mekelle, has been the target of a new bombing on Wednesday, according to Tigray Television, controlled by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

The television channel has published through its official Facebook account a video in which columns of smoke can be seen, without being able to confirm what happened. The Ethiopian Army has not commented for the moment.

The Ethiopian Armed Forces on Monday carried out a series of bombings against what it described as TPLF communication and weapons facilities in Mekelle, hours after the TPLF reported attacks on “civilian targets” against the town and its surroundings.

Following this, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said the shelling resulted in the deaths of three children, after the UN expressed “deep concern” over the escalating conflict in this northern region of Ethiopia.

The conflict began in November last year when the Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, ordered a military offensive in retaliation for the attack on the army base in Mekelle, after months of tensions between the TPLF and the central government over the postponement of the parliamentary elections, finally held in June and in which Abiy won a landslide victory in the face of calls for a boycott and the lack of voting in several areas – including Tigray – due to insecurity.

However, the TPLF made significant gains in June that allowed it to recapture Mekelle, after which Abiy announced a unilateral ceasefire citing humanitarian reasons, rejected by the group, which expanded its offensive to the adjacent Amhara and Afar regions, which causes a huge hamartian crises. But most of the time, the West World don’t mention this crises triggered by TPLF.
