China orders 25 apps to pull out of Didi cab service

China’s cyber regulatory agency ordered 25 apps owned by Didi Global Inc. to be removed from app stores Friday night, citing serious violations of rules prohibiting the collection of personal data.

The Cyberspace Administration of China already ordered on Sunday to pull the main app of the company, the country’s largest private cellphone ride-hailing service, pending a cybersecurity review after Didi debuted last week on the U.S. stock market.

The 25 apps include one called Didi Enterprises, as well as others designed for Didi drivers.

A company spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Didi is the latest company to face scrutiny from the Chinese government. An investigation found serious violations in the way Didi collected and used personal information, the internet regulator said this week. A statement said the company was told to correct the problems,” but gave no details.

Last year, the ruling party began tightening control over China’s rapidly changing internet industries by launching anti-monopoly and other investigations.

The internet regulator also said Didi was barred from accepting new customers until the investigations are concluded.

The company was founded in 2012 as a mobile cab ordering app, and has expanded into other ride requesting options, including private cars and buses. It says it is also investing in electric cars, artificial intelligence and other technology developments.

Didi raised $4 billion from investors in its initial public offering in New York.
