The former president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, was found guilty of committing at least 175 assaults against journalists and attacks on press freedom, for which he must pay a fine of 50,000 reais, just over $10,000, detailed the local Intercept media.
The ruling was issued on Monday by the 4th Private Law Chamber of the Sao Paulo Court of Justice, following a complaint made by the Union of Journalists of that state, based on 26 direct attacks, 149 attempts to discredit the press and two acts to the detriment of the National Federation of Journalists (Fenaj).
In his defense, Bolsonaro said he was only criticizing the “left-wing press.” The former president has the option of appealing the conviction in higher judicial instances. The source of the data presented in the process against the far-right was the report entitled “Violence against journalists and freedom of the press in Brazil”prepared in 2020 by Fenaj.
Jair Bolsonaro is sentenced in the second instance for 175 assaults against day laborers. He will have to pay a fine of R$ 50 thousand. In his defense, he said that he barely criticized “left-wing printing.” https://t.co/7GisEJZmtn by @Vinciussegalla1
